Announcing LiveJournal: The First Decade

We're thrilled to announce the release of LiveJournal: The First Decade, a groundbreaking anthology that celebrates ten years of original content drawn from LiveJournal users around the world, featuring photos, comics, stories, memes, editorials, and graphic content. Published in honor of LiveJournal’s tenth anniversary, the book is being distributed by Blurb.com, the leader in POD, and is available in both softcover and hardcover editions in the Blurb Bookstore.

Long known as a premier destination for creative writers, artists, and eclectic thinkers, the anthology showcases a cross-section of extraordinary talent, including:

  • Excerpts from OnNoTheDidn't (a/k/a ohnotheydidnt), the largest community on LiveJournal, covering celebrity gossip, entertainment news, and pop culture.
  • A look at post-Katrina New Orleans from the journal of Poppy Z. Brite
  • Compelling narratives, including a gripping reverie on a blind date
  • Photography from around the world, ranging from old-fashioned Polaroids to underwater photography
  • Mouthwatering recipes and images from food_porn, dedicated to demonstrating that bacon improves everything

What began as a late-night inspiration back in Brad Fitzpatrick's college dorm room in 1999 has grown to nearly 25 million users worldwide, with journals and communities on every conceivable hobby, political conviction, and topic. We thank you for sharing your passion and look forward to the next ten years of friendship, drama, and fun!

Anniversary theme design contest!

LiveJournal Theme Contest

Create a new theme based on the Minimalism style. The theme can be based on LiveJournal, LiveJournal's 10th anniversary, or LiveJournal's birthday, but it is not required - you may also choose any topic you're feeling inspired about.

Entries will be accepted from now until midnight on September 14th. A poll with all eligible entries will be posted that week and you'll be able to pick your favorite.

The top five voted themes will become available themes for all LiveJournal users and be included in the Featured Themes area through the end of the year, with the name (or username) of the creator.

The single top-voted of the winning 5 will become the default theme for all new users through the end of the year.

In addition to the top five themes via vote, staff will select one "staff's choice" as the 6th winning theme which will also become a Featured Theme. Here are the details:

1. Use Minimalism as a base style
2. Should work for all account types, with ads and without
3. Total size of background images should not exceed 512Kb
4. Should work in FF 3.0, Safari 3.1, IE 6, Opera 9.5 and newer browsers
5. Should be applied to all pages of the journal -- recent entries, single entry, friends, archive (day/month/year) and tags
6. All page navigation should be present (tags, post a comment, read comments, link, track, etc.)
6. You may create your theme using CSS, S2, images for backgrounds or headers, or any other way you wish; we will code the winning styles into S2 for you.
7. You may submit more than one design
8. You must own copyright to any images or graphics used (so original graphics or art are best)

To enter:
Make a new post in the lj_turns10 community (here) with the following:
- Screenshot of the latest journal entries page (500x800). It should only include the contents of the browser window, no address bar, frames, and/or buttons
- Link to test journal where theme is applied
- A brief description of your theme
- Links to any CSS, images, or other items used to create your theme

We can't wait to see what you create!

First Peek at the Book

We're almost done pulling together all the entries for the book and thought we'd share a little of what's going to be in it. Starting today, each week we're going to be featuring an entry from the book.

It should come as no surprise that everyone's favorite goat is going to be cavorting around the pages of the anthology. This isn't all you see of Frank in the book, but here's a little glimpse:

ryanestrada keeps track of Frank's activities in comics posted at the aptly named frankthecomic. In this episode, Frank goes on a date.

Favorite LJ Memes

Memes are one of the more distinctive (and fun) aspects of LJ culture and we want to include a section on them in the book. We're interested in hearing what your favorite memes have been over the past 10 years. Is it reaching for the nearest book, opening it up to p. 100, and posting the first line of the second paragraph? Or maybe you prefer putting your iPod on shuffle, clicking three songs forward, and posting the lyrics to that song? What about a screenshot of your desktop? Posting a cut-and-paste of whatever happens to be on your clipboard at the moment?

We could go on (and on, and on) but we want to from you. Comment below with your all-time faves and we'll try to work them into the book.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Thanks to everyone for all your great suggestions. We had a great time reading through all of them and reliving the last 10 years. We've assembled a rough Table of Contents and are no longer accepting entries for the book. If you have received a private message from lj10mod in the past week or so, congratulations! It means your material is on the short list for inclusion in the anniversary anthology. We're still in the process of contacting people and pulling it all together, so stand by for more updates in the next few weeks.

an entry in consideration for the book

I'd like to submit an entry for the LJ book! :)

As background, I work as a caretaker for an apartment complex. Our complex mostly deals with people who are mentally ill. Not everyone is, but even the ones who aren't are sort of loopy. Unfortunately, I also live in the ghetto, so my complex is also the target of a lot of crime.

Last fall, we had a gay couple move in. I was excited about it, since I'm a lesbian myself and I feel a bit alone in that aspect. But whoops, I had no idea what I was in for? I did have a better idea, however, after getting woken up at three in the morning by one of them screaming in the parking lot. While wearing rainbow hotpants. With a hot pink mohawk. It only got more worse from there. One of them deals drugs and the other one is always beating the hell out of people. One is a crossdresser and they are both heavily into the hip hop culture. I dubbed them "gay!niggas" in casual conversation, which perhaps isn't the most PC in the world, but at the time I didn't know how to describe it. The name stuck, and my friends oftentimes look forward to the sundry tales I can tell about their antics.

This is a big favorite of my friends. Basically, one time I had to do a rental inspection. The results were not pretty. You can read the tale here: http://rosicrucian.livejournal.com/1119394.html
