Favorite LJ Memes
lj10mod wrote in lj_turns10
Memes are one of the more distinctive (and fun) aspects of LJ culture and we want to include a section on them in the book. We're interested in hearing what your favorite memes have been over the past 10 years. Is it reaching for the nearest book, opening it up to p. 100, and posting the first line of the second paragraph? Or maybe you prefer putting your iPod on shuffle, clicking three songs forward, and posting the lyrics to that song? What about a screenshot of your desktop? Posting a cut-and-paste of whatever happens to be on your clipboard at the moment?

We could go on (and on, and on) but we want to from you. Comment below with your all-time faves and we'll try to work them into the book.

I loved a book meme that was making the rounds around LJ; it listed 100 or so books & you would list what you'd read, what you loved, what you'd never read, and what you're planning to read.

Also, I really like the icon memes. There's quite a few different ones out there, but the most recent one I did was where a friend would select five of one's userpics and the chosen person would describe why they had that icon.

Below are my top 3 favorite memes. And here's a link to an essay I wrote about memes generally: what they are, what they mean, and how they function on LJ.

My favorite memes:

The Five Questions Meme
How this meme works:
1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

The Holiday Wish List Meme
Step One
* Make a post (public, friends locked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. List your 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV."). The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
* If you wish for real life things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
* Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ.

Step Two
* Surf around your friends list (or friends friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
* If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use - do it. You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf - to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not - it's your call.
* There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My year in review meme combined several of those memes so mine is pretty epic with 56 or so questions! :^) Very similar though!

I'm curious: What questions does your year-end survey include that's not here? I might revise mine if you've got some good ones.

56. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

1. It begins with a list of all 26 letters of the alphabet.

2. Comment with something for me to talk about that starts with one of those letters. Make me babble about anything -- TV shows, actors, actresses, food, etc. Be creative. :D

3. One topic per letter -- it's like a claims list! I will cross off letters as topics appear. If you'd like to make more than one request (for different letters), go for it. Just don't steal all the letters.

4. I will post a new post talking about all 26 topics given to me!

Friends List Meme

1. Copy and paste your friends list.
2. If you've friended multiple journals by the same person, delete all but the main one.
3. Bold the name of everyone you know or have met in real life.
4. Italicize the name of everyone you've spoken to on the phone.
5. Underline the name of everyone you've chatted with online.
6. [Bracket] people you've known, online or off, for five years or more.
7. *star* people who you've gone to school with. (primary/secondary/college)
8. Turn red people who you are related to.

Back in 03, somebody decided to do a meme by soliciting questions, then having us all answer them. Here's the version as I answered it;

Right here, see?

Comment o'randomness was always my favourite, simply because it was a great way to get to know your flist (especially useful if like me you know only a few people from your flist in 'real life').

Leave me a comment o' randomness; your favourite quote, the best sandwich in the world, a good song lyric, what colour pants you're wearing and I'll respond with five questions you can answer in your own LJ leaving with them an open invitation for other people to give you comments o' randomness. Then you can ask them questions and before you know it we'll all know everything about everyone - even if we've never met!

My favourite questions to ask were:
Describe your favourite photograph. Who/what is in it?
Describe the view from your nearest window.
If you were left in the wild to fend for yourself would you survive?
Find something that's precious to you in your home (not person/pet) and describe it, what makes it so special?
I send you back 10 years in your life to face yourself, what would you tell you?

Oh, I might steal that first one! :P

I am a big fan of the Year in Review memes...I try to do them each January -- and sometimes add a new one.

Here are the favs.

-Go to your Calendar and find the first entry for each month of 2008. Post the first line of it in your journal, and that's your "Year In Review." (i am also going to add the subject line, in italics, and the date of the first entry in ())

-list the first person to give you a comment every month

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?

The anonymous love letter meme seemed a really good one where people could comment with a love letter to anyone they wanted anonymously. I hear there is a pretty epic long term version of said meme on this journal: bookshop
(But I don't know how to make her name a link in comments :/)

IDK where this one initially originated, but I've seen random playlist memes done on LJ, where you skip through your MP3 player at random and answer the questions listed with the song titles you land on. Also my friends are really into the "Eight Days of Happy" meme, where you post one happy thing for eight days in a row and tag one of your friends to do the same. Pretty soon you have happy entries to the nth power LOL.
